Tom GauldLecture: How I Draw Cartoons

How I use drawing to invent, think through, and present my ideas.

Biography

Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator living and working in London. He studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He draws weekly cartoons The Guardian and New Scientist magazine and the occasional cartoon for The New Yorker, and has created a number of comic books, among them The Gigantic Robot, Goliath and You’re All Just Jealous of my Jetpack.

«Gauld makes comics in a lot of the minor-key ways, many of which were also utilized by influence Edward Gorey : an almost textural feel to individual images, startling contrasts in terms of size of figures and narrative elements, a casual reduction of visual keys into a more rudimentary drawing style, incremental changes in design elements from panel to panel.» Tom Spurgeon
