Lecture: Kultur & Technik

Joost Swarte is a comic artist whose adventures stretch from cartoons to stained glass windows, illustrations for magazines like The New Yorker, to a theatre building: De Toneelschuur in Haarlem, Holland. Graphic storytelling always is the focus of his approach.

Joost Swarte is a Dutch graphic designer and artist born in 1947. He is best known for his “clear line style” of drawing – in fact, he even coined the term “ligne claire” in reference to the style pioneered by Hergé. He has published extensively in magazines and has won numerous awards.

«A giant of European cartooning since the 1970s and ’80s and a leading exemplar of the “ligne claire” style» David Peniston
